While this isn't "the" infamous May 18 eruption, there was an explosion and ash plume on June 12. A basic Wiki glance reveals this:
At 7:05 p.m. on June ... 12, a plume of ash billowed 2.5 miles (4.0 km) above the volcano. At 9:09 p.m. a much stronger explosion sent an ash column about 10 miles (16 km) skyward.[34] This event caused the Portland area, previously spared by wind direction, to be thinly coated with ash in the middle of the annual Rose Festival.[35] A dacite dome then oozed into existence on the crater floor, growing to a height of 200 feet (61 m) and a width of 1,200 feet (370 m) within a week.[34]
It was Portland's turn to be ashed.
While I dig this show for the oddity of it all, I find the other Portland show from May 11 to be far superior. That Fire is dragon Jerry spitting balls of fire at the rock lobster crowd.

I remember hearing the Mt. St. Helens/Fire On the Mountain story which I always took as gospel...however the interwebs would indicate that the eruptions
...
occured between March 27 and May 18, 1980. In point of fact, the Dead were not playing the night of the big eruption, and were on the east coast the entire time the mountain was on fire. Deadheads!

Like Jerry used to say, it was all just synchronicity. The show is a lot better than the previous few, but it wasn't THAT hot.

flows down the volcano's north flank. The episodes in June, August, and October also erupted lava in the crater to form a dome. The June and August domes were destroyed by subsequent explosive episodes.
The show? Liquid hot magma. Thx, Dr. Evil.....

Check out the jam in Cassidy, that's about as hard as that song can rock. In fact, Bobby is 'on' the entire show. Lots and lots of energy. Thank you

for taping and sharing this fantastic artifact.

Was this a minor eruption at Mt. St. Helens? The "big" eruption happened almost a month earlier on May 18th. I don't remember hearing about another eruption.

parousia70 is right. I was there too and (no kidding) it was my first show as well. I'll never forget wandering the lot of The Coliseum during the ash-fall
...
and using the windshield wipers on the way home. It seemed deeply surreal at the time. I grew up in Portland and was in high school. The windshield wiper thing didn't work so well, but what was a truly bad idea was when we decided to squirt some wiper fluid on the windshield.
We lived to tell the tale, arrived home (accidentally waking up my folks) and made a huge thing of pasta and marinara. Great, great night.
. . . and am I the only one who briefly thought, "hey, it's snowing" despite the fact that it was the middle of June?

FINALLY!
My First Show.... been looking for a good copy since the very next day!
At Last!
Of note: Mt St Helens Erupted DURING Fire on the Mountain, ... causing an early exit as the band and gear had to make it up I-5 to Seattle for the show on the 13th, they ended up closing I-5 due to ash fall not long after the trucks (and several VW Busses) made it through.
Thanks for Posting, Can't wait for FURTHUR at this same spot in a month!

The MOTB team(whoever they are) really know how to clean up audience recordings. 1980-1981 are not known for having good soundboards but with high quality
...
aud's like this who cares? Alabama Getaway was still fresh and well played at this time and Cassidy really catches fire but it's the Scarlet-Fire that makes this a must have. If you like the rock n roll Dead better than the jazz years, I suggest the period of May 1980-Oct 1981.
